Now the United Nations is officially giving up the man h u n t fo r S om a li w a r lo rd Mohamed Farrah Aidid. The Security Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to call o ff the search for Aidid and launch a new inqu iry into a t tacks on U.N. peacekeepers in Somalia. A id id has been blam ed fo r many of those attacks, but the Security Council is backing off its co nd em na tion o f h im in hopes o f inc lud ing him in e f forts to find a political solution fo r Somalia. Many observers be lieve th a t any se ttle m e n t must ultimately include Aidid. The C linton adm in is tra tion , stung by public anger over the deaths of U.S. soldiers in what was supposed to be a humani ta rian re lie f m ission, sees the move as part of the preparation for a complete U.S. troop w ith drawal from Somalia by March 31. W ash ing ton hopes to ease tens ions in S om alia so c iv il war, chaos and starvation don’t r e tu rn w hen the A m e rica n troops leave. The Security Council resolu tion also said tha t the United Nations should “ make appro priate provision” for people in detention — an oblique sugges tion that A id id ’s detained aides may be released. The United Nations is holding 35 Somalis, including three of A id id ’s top aides. E ight other d e ta inees w ere re leased Tuesday.
